The ability to directly access and control your computer from anywhere can be a real help. Seeing your own desktop screen and knowing just where to find your files and folders can be a great relief in many situations.
When you must get to your information and simply aren’t able to physically access it, you can use a remote desktop access program that will allow you to log onto your machine from anywhere that you have internet access. If you are on a local area network (LAN), you can instantly access your computer using a command entered into the “run” line or a local machine address entered into the internet browser address bar. This assumes that if it is within a corporate environment, that you are allowed to use this method. Your tech support should be able to give you the address or information needed.
If you are outside a LAN, you can run internet software that will find your machine ( as long as it is turned on and connected) and let you log on securely, then see and interact with your desktop as if you were there.
There are also Virtual Private Networks, where using a log on id and running a small piece of software or internet program you can accomplish the same thing, again securely and quickly gaining access to your desktop, and your files and folders.
Helpful and handy when needed, remote machine access can be a lifesaver.

System updates are one of the most important things you can do to keep your system safe. The updates are used to correct bugs in software and also be used to plug holes in security that some scripts can use to access your information. These updates are needed also to help the software support new hardware or update the functions to enhance its functionality with current hardware.

There are two ways to help you get your system updates.

1. You can set your computer to run them automatically on a scheduled day and time. On Windows machines, this is usually found listed in the “Security Center” section of the Control Panel page.

2.Mark your calendar. For those who want more control, you can always select “Windows Update” from your start menu. This will open your browser and you can select exactly which updates you would like to install.

There are generally 2 types of updates:

Critical: These updates are mainly security patches and bug fixes that repair issues that cause system crashes and other problems.

Optional: Optional updates can add certain functions to your software like updating drivers.

Updating your system is incredibly important and also very easy to do so there is no reason to not do it. It will keep your system running smoother and more secure.

Sometimes, desktop computers slow down with time. If you had yours for four years or more, you may experience problems with it. Examples of problems include a slow Internet connection, viruses and spyware, slow start-up and frequent crashes. Your computer’s technical support may suggest scanning your computer for viruses or reinstalling the operating system. No matter what you try, you find that your computer still slows down. This means that it is either time to upgrade your computer or purchase a new one.Get more information here. http://mikeledingham.wordpress.com/2011/07/20/mike-ledingham-computer-engineer/

First, you need to figure out which one is the most cost effective for your wallet. Upgrading your computer may seem to be the cheapest option, but only if you shop around. Find out what the problem is laying behind your computer. If it is a faulty hard drive or motherboard, shop around for prices. Find out how much it will cost you to purchase one. This may also be a waste of money if purchasing upgraded parts does not solve the problem.

Shop around for new computers. Look out for deals in the Sunday newspaper and online. Only shop for computers that have the specs you need. This will help save you money on purchasing one that you do not need.

The internet is a powerful tool which we have begun to take for granted. We use it for everything from research for a project or assignment, to a mode of entertainment and communication. When something takes on this degree of assimilation, there is a tendency to take it for granted. The internet is a little like a cat. You may live with one and derive a good deal of pleasure from it, but you should never trust it entirely.

A first line of defense is a current antivirus program. Just having one isn’t enough. It must be updated regularly to be of any value. It must be upgraded when it expires.

Emails, even from known contacts, can contain viruses. Be wary of any emails with attachments that you are not expecting.

Unfamiliar websites can host a variety of viruses and malware that may attach itself to your computer upon entering the site. Using only trusted or pre-screened sites will prevent problems.

File sharing websites are a breeding ground of malicious viruses. Not only are many of these sites involved in less than legal activities, but they can also infect a computer when downloading.

Being vigilant in monitoring your computer is very important. It will help to keep your machine safe and running efficiently.
