The internet is a powerful tool which we have begun to take for granted. We use it for everything from research for a project or assignment, to a mode of entertainment and communication. When something takes on this degree of assimilation, there is a tendency to take it for granted. The internet is a little like a cat. You may live with one and derive a good deal of pleasure from it, but you should never trust it entirely.
A first line of defense is a current antivirus program. Just having one isn’t enough. It must be updated regularly to be of any value. It must be upgraded when it expires.
Emails, even from known contacts, can contain viruses. Be wary of any emails with attachments that you are not expecting.
Unfamiliar websites can host a variety of viruses and malware that may attach itself to your computer upon entering the site. Using only trusted or pre-screened sites will prevent problems.
File sharing websites are a breeding ground of malicious viruses. Not only are many of these sites involved in less than legal activities, but they can also infect a computer when downloading.
Being vigilant in monitoring your computer is very important. It will help to keep your machine safe and running efficiently.
